A Guide to Choosing a Signet Ring
A signet ring has a flat face made for engraving, traditionally a seal pressed into wax. This page holds every ring in the Swan Jewellry workshop, across monograms, family crests, Masonic and fraternal designs, class rings, faith rings, symbolic rings and custom commissions. Each ring is made to order in sterling silver, gold plated, vermeil or solid gold, cast individually, engraved and finished by hand.
How a signet ring is made
Each ring is cast individually, then engraved and finished by hand. Nothing waits on a shelf: production starts after you approve a digital proof, and takes about 2 business days. The face is where your design lives, so the shape matters, whether oval, round, square or cushion. Larger faces hold more detail, and smaller faces suit a single letter or a simple symbol. The how personalization works page covers the proof step.
Which collection to start from
Start with the idea. Initials point to the monogram collection, a crest or coat of arms to family crest rings, a lodge or fraternal emblem to Masonic rings, a school and year to class rings, a belief to the faith or symbolic collections, and your own drawing or logo to custom rings. Men's, women's and unisex pages sort the same range by who will wear it. Pick one door and the rest follow.
Silver, plated, vermeil and solid gold
925 sterling silver is the practical base for most signet rings. Gold plated, rose gold plated and platinum plated finishes put a colored layer over silver, and gold vermeil does the same with real gold, and all of them wear with daily use over months to years. Solid 10K, 14K or 18K gold resists wear and tarnish better. Each product lists its own metals, so check the option list for the design you like before you order.
Sizing, delivery and guarantee
Choose your US size on the product page, and use the ring size guide if you are unsure. Delivery is free, tracked and takes 5 to 7 business days after production, and US orders ship with duties and import fees covered. Personalized rings are non-refundable, but defects, wrong items and eligible size exchanges are covered, and the Lifetime Craftsmanship Guarantee covers manufacturing defects and setting faults. Details are on the warranty page.
Frequently asked questions
What is a signet ring?
A signet ring is a ring with a flat engraved face that carries a personal mark such as initials, a crest or an emblem. It began as a seal pressed into wax. Swan Jewellry makes them to order, engraved by hand from the details or artwork you send.
What finger does a signet ring go on?
Traditionally the pinky of the non-dominant hand, though the ring finger and index finger are common too. There is no fixed rule. Choose the finger first, then your US size for that finger, and check the ring size guide if you are between sizes.
How are signet rings made?
At Swan Jewellry each ring is cast individually, then engraved and finished by hand. Personalized work starts with a digital proof you approve, and production then takes about 2 business days. Nothing is cut or cast until the design is approved.
What is the difference between gold plated, vermeil and solid gold?
Gold plated and vermeil rings carry a gold layer over a silver base, and vermeil uses real gold. Both wear with daily use over months to years. Solid 10K, 14K or 18K gold is gold all the way through and resists wear and tarnish better.
What size signet ring should I order?
Order your normal US ring size for the finger you will wear it on, and confirm it with the ring size guide. Measure at the end of the day, when fingers are slightly larger. Eligible ring-size exchanges are covered under the exchange and return policy.
