Turning a Coat of Arms Into a Signet Ring Face
A family crest ring is a signet ring engraved with a crest, coat of arms or shield that you supply. This collection is for anyone who wants a family emblem on the hand: a gift for a father or son, a keepsake for a wedding, or a ring that continues a tradition. Swan Jewellry adapts your artwork to the ring face, casts each ring individually, then engraves and finishes it by hand once you approve a digital proof.
Start with artwork you are entitled to use
The ring is made from the crest or coat of arms you send, so the artwork matters most. A clear front-facing image, scan, vector file or sketch all work. Arms are granted to individuals, not to surnames, so a last name alone does not mean a crest belongs to your family. If a relative holds arms or your family records show them, send those. If you have no crest, a design can be drawn from your own symbols, initials or a sketch.
Detail, face shape and engraving
A full coat of arms can carry a shield, helm, mantling, supporters and a motto, and a ring face only has so much room. The workshop simplifies fine lines so the main elements stay readable. Larger oval, cushion and shield faces give a busy crest more space, while a simple crest sits well on a smaller round face. Some designs add black enamel to deepen contrast. Tell us which elements matter most and those are the ones we keep sharp.
A metal for a ring that gets handed down
925 sterling silver is the practical default. Gold plated, rose gold plated and gold vermeil finishes add warmth over a silver base and wear with daily use over months to years. Solid 10K, 14K or 18K gold resists wear and tarnish better, so it is the usual choice for a ring meant to outlast its first owner. Check each product's option list, since metals vary by design. The Lifetime Craftsmanship Guarantee covers manufacturing defects and setting faults, not normal plating wear.
Proof, production and gifting
After you order, the workshop sends a digital proof showing your crest on the chosen face, within 24 to 48 hours. Ask for changes before you approve it. Production starts after approval and takes about 2 business days, then shipping is free, tracked and takes 5 to 7 business days, with duties covered on US orders. Because the ring is personalized, it is non-refundable, so confirm the artwork and size first. The ring size guide helps when the ring is a gift.
Frequently asked questions
Can anyone have a family crest?
Not through a surname alone. Coats of arms are granted to individuals, not surnames, so a last name does not give a family a crest. Swan Jewellry makes rings from artwork you supply and are entitled to use, such as arms held by a relative, family records or a design of your own.
How do I find my family crest?
Start with relatives, old documents, a family bible or genealogy records, and look for arms granted to a direct ancestor. A site that sells a crest by surname is not proof that one belongs to you. Once you have an image, upload it on the product page and we adapt it to the ring.
What finger do you wear a family crest ring on?
Traditionally the little finger of the non-dominant hand, though any finger works. The pinky keeps the face visible and out of the way of daily knocks, while the ring finger suits a larger face. Choose your US size on the product page for the finger you plan to use.
Can a coat of arms be simplified for a ring?
Yes. Fine details can be reduced so the shield, crest and main symbols stay recognizable on a small face. A larger oval, cushion or shield face keeps more detail. The digital proof shows the adapted design, and you can ask for changes before production starts.
Can I order a family crest ring as a gift?
Yes. Choose the US size with the ring size guide, upload the crest, and approve the proof yourself. Personalized rings are non-refundable, but manufacturing defects, wrong items and eligible ring-size exchanges are covered, so size carefully and read the exchange and return policy before you order.
